ASCA acquires world’s largest intellectual property portfolio of printed organic photovoltaics

ASCA, an organic photovoltaics (OPV) global leader and part of the French ARMOR Group, has purchased the most relevant device- and module-related intellectual property (IP) portfolio regarding printed OPV. At the end of 2021, ASCA took patents on OPV production and technology from the Darmstadt, Germany-based leading science and technology company Merck. With this purchase, the company has become the largest portfolio owner with regard to printed OPV worldwide through tripling its number of patents.

ASCA increases performance of organic solar cells by integrating new semiconductors

By using new semiconductor materials, organic solar cell expert ASCA has increased the efficiency of its modules by 40 percent. The new components are supplied by the Taiwanese company Raynergy Tek. Raynergy Tek specialises in developing organic semiconductor materials for OPV modules, such as non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs). With an efficiency record of around 20 percent in laboratory cells, they promise significantly higher performance than conventional acceptors. ASCA has succeeded in integrating NFA-based materials into its prefabrication for the first time. Using materials supplied by Raynergy Tek, the company has been able to increase the efficiency of its semi-transparent free-form solar modules to around 70 watts per square metre.

GARBE Renewable Energy – GREEN GmbH, subsidiary of GARBE Industrial Real Estate GmbH, has inaugurated a new film photovoltaic system installed on the external façade in cooperation with the companies Heliatek GmbH (Dresden, Germany) and ADLER Smart Solutions GmbH on 13 October 2021.
