Imec, KU Leuven and PragmatIC Semiconductor demonstrate fastest 8-bit flexible microprocessor for low-power applications

This week, at the 2022 International Solid-State Circuits Conference (2022 ISSCC), imec, a world-leading research and innovation hub in nanoelectronics and digital technologies, KU Leuven, and PragmatIC Semiconductor (Cambridge, UK), a world leader in flexible electronics, present the fastest 8-bit microprocessor in 0.8µm metal-oxide flexible technology capable of running real-time complex assembly code. The microprocessor was implemented with a unique digital design flow that allowed the creation of a new standard cell library for metal-oxide thin-film technologies – relevant for designing a broad range of loT applications. The robust thin-film technology offered by imec’s foundry partner PragmatIC Semiconductor was key to integrate the approximately ~16 000 metal-oxide thin-film transistors on a 24.9mm2 flexible chip.

Apple joins as first public partner in new imec research programme to reduce the ecological footprint of semiconductors

Imec (Leuven, Belgium), a leading research and innovation hub in nanoelectronics and digital technologies, has announced that Apple Inc. has joined its brand-new Sustainable Semiconductor Technologies and Systems (SSTS) research programme. The SSTS programme is the first initiative rallying stakeholders from across the IC value chain to anticipate the environmental impact of choices made at chip technology’s definition phase. Using concrete and reliable models, and detailed (carbon) footprint analyses, the programme is expected to help the IC-making industry cut back on its ecological footprint – as part of the global fight against climate change, resources depletion and pollution.

Imec and NeuroGyn AG collaborate on advanced neurostimulation device

Imec (Leuven, Belgium), a leading research and innovation centre in nanoelectronics and digital technologies, announces a collaboration to develop a next-generation implantable device for peripheral nerve stimulation together with NeuroGyn AG, a Swiss medtech company specialised in neurostimulaton and surgical solutions for pelvic nerve disorders. Leveraging the expertise of imec The Netherlands at Holst Centre with respect to ultra-low power wireless communication and powering, the new solution aims at prolonging the lifetime of the device while lowering its cost, making it suitable at the point of need. Clinical validation is planned after the development phase.
