Voltfang opens Europe’s first second-life battery storage factory
The leading provider of green battery storage solutions for industrial, commercial and large-scale applications has officially opened its new production facility in Aachen, Germany.
The production facility manufactures high-performance, energy-dense storage solutions. It is scheduled to produce 250 MWh per year by the end of 2026 and 1 GWh per year by the end of 2030.
The new site in the TRIWO Technopark Aachen covers 6,000 square metres and is located in the former production halls of electric car manufacturer Next.e.GO. Since production started in April, Voltfang has been manufacturing high-performance energy storage systems from second-life as well as surplus batteries from the European automotive industry. This resource-saving use of existing batteries reduces dependence on Asian supply chains and strengthens local value creation. Voltfang's production capacity has increased fivefold in the past year. In this way, the company is making an important contribution to the energy transition and to the long-term competitiveness of Germany as an industrial location.
Many guests from the worlds of politics and business attended the opening. Speaking at the event, Hendrik Wüst, the Minister-President of North Rhine-Westphalia, praised the reduction of reliance on global supply chains and step forward in the production of sustainable energy systems David Oudsandji, co-founder and managing director of Voltfang, is delighted with the high level of interest: "The market for battery storage is growing dynamically, and Voltfang is actively shaping this growth. Today's opening is an important step for Voltfang and a strong signal for the future of energy supply in Germany and Europe. We are very pleased to welcome so many partners, supporters and companions here in Aachen today. Our vision is to develop high-performance battery storage systems for German and European industry and to manufacture them here in Germany. With the new plant, we are not only scaling up production, but also making an important contribution to the economic, ecological and social transformation of the lignite region in North Rhine-Westphalia."
