SALD expands to new high-tech location

In the course of its expansion, the Dutch company SALD BV has moved into new headquarters in Eindhoven. The technology hotbed has developed “Spatial Atomic Layer Deposition,” a globally unique, patented process for applying coatings as thin as a single atom on an industrial scale.

CEO Frank Verhage says: “Our atomic coatings will revolutionise entire industries, including the production of battery cells for cars and smart devices, the textile industry and fashion, as well as the solar energy sector. We are accommodating the sharp increase in demand with significantly expanded premises.”

For example, SALD is moving into a research and development (R&D) lab that is twice the size of what is needed for roll-to-roll tooling. Industrial roll-to-roll production equipment involves unrolling a flexible base material, imprinting or printing a structure on it and rolling it up again. In combination with SALD technology, it is possible to print nano-thin coatings with specific properties and functions onto the roll. R2R mass printing production is used for flexible electronic components, packaging films, textiles, solar and battery coatings, among others. In addition, the new headquarters provides SALD with a much larger production hall, which is needed for the manufacture of R&D tools. “We are expanding in all market sectors: Batteries, new solar systems, packaging, membranes and electrolysers,” says CEO Frank Verhage, explaining the reason for the necessary move.

The new STS building at Eindhoven Airport is considered an up-and-coming technology centre in the Netherlands. Besides SALD, Smith Thermal Solutions, Domicro and LeydenJar as well as numerous other high-tech companies reside there.
