Opening of FFB PreFab in Münster: A battery cell factory for research and development

The "FFB PreFab" at the Fraunhofer research department for battery cells FFB in the Hansa Business-Park, Münster (Germany), will be officially inaugurated on Tuesday, 30 April. The plans behind: to enable industry-oriented production research with plant technology on a large industrial scale.

As an open battery cell factory for research and development purposes, the Fraunhofer FFB is intended to "make a key contribution to advancing the production of battery cells and establishing itself at the forefront of strong international competition," according to the official invitation.

The construction work of the battery cell research production centre in Münster had "now reached a significant milestone: the official opening of the first construction phase of the PreFab of the battery cell factory," the organisers continue. The Fraunhofer Research Facility for Battery Cell Production FFB is thus officially starting its research operations on around 6450 square metres of research space with the commissioning of innovative European machine technology. This is supposed to be an important step towards the establishment of the FFB Fab, which will enable industry-oriented production research with plant technology on a large industrial scale in Münster.

At FFB PreFab, a small-scale battery cell production sample line will be set up in the usable space. This will prepare and accelerate the construction and commissioning of the subsequent test line for medium-scale production research and the production line for large-scale production research. The FFB PreFab will have a machine capacity of around 200 megawatt hours per year for electrode production. The FFB PreFab, like the FFB Fab, will be built on the Hansa BusinessPark site.

Bettina Stark-Watzinger, Federal Minister of Education and Research, Hendrik Wüst, Minister President of North Rhine-Westphalia, and the President of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, Prof Holger Hanselka, will officially open the research building during the opening ceremony.
