LED-on-foil technology redefines automotive lighting

ALIYOS technology enables ams OSRAM to apply LEDs onto a thin, flexible and transparent substrate. This advance paves the way for transformative designs in which light emerges from surfaces to provide an interactive experience. In the latest demonstrator, ALIYOS LED foils are integrated behind various covers. LEONHARD KURZ's In-Mould Decoration (IMD) and Functional Foil Bonding (FFB) technologies form the basis for this innovation.

ams OSRAM, one of the world's leading manufacturers of intelligent emitters and sensors, announces the next step in the development of its LED-on-foil technology: the introduction of an innovative approach incorporating LED foils into automotive applications. By applying heat and pressure in the FFB post-mould hot stamping process, LED foils are integrated behind various covers. Combined with surface decoration via IMD, the result is a greater design flexibility, enabling light to emerge from surfaces and opening up new opportunities for the automotive lighting industry.

Enriched with the FFB and IMD technologies, the ALIYOS demonstrator features four distinct, ultra-thin light panels, each with  unique surface designs and lighting effects. With 32 individually addressable red segments per panel, these designs create light patterns that enhance the aesthetic and functional aspects of automotive interior and exterior lighting. When switched off, the light source becomes invisible, creating the illusion of light appearing out of nowhere when switched on. The emerging technology meets the latest industry trends, and provides automotive designers with powerful new options. “The introduction of the ALIYOS technology - and also this demonstrator set up in cooperation with LEONHARD KURZ - reflect ams OSRAM’s innovation leadership position in automotive lighting,” said Dr. Stephan Hartmann, Vice President Automotive Exterior, adding: “We thus unlock a whole new world of possibilities for creating visually captivating and functionally superior lighting solutions that resonate emotionally with users. Furthermore, we increase the efficiency of the lighting solution and flat modules. This saves material while optimizing the utilization of installation space compared to traditional approaches”.

LED-on-foil technology allows individual segments to be formed, creating detailed and sharp visuals. The full brightness control for each segment enables automotive designers and manufacturers to create dynamic, interactive lighting solutions that enhance vehicle aesthetics. Limitations due to the complexity, energy intensity or installation size of components are reduced, and new lighting functions can be smoothly integrated into a car’s design language. The jointly created demonstrator will be unveiled at SIA VISION 2024 in Paris, France, at the 16-17 October 2024.
