Epishine and Brilliant Matters join forces to take light harvesting to the next level

Organic solar cell manufacturer Epishine (Linköping, Sweden) and organic semiconductor producer Brilliant Matters (Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures, Canada) are joining forces in an Eurostars project to take the next step towards the most scalable and sustainable energy-harvesting solution.

Today, the majority of sensors and low-power electronics rely on disposable batteries, resulting in a higher environmental impact and increased maintenance costs due to frequent battery replacements. Light energy harvesting, essentially indoor solar cells, provides an excellent solution to these issues by replacing or complementing current battery-centred solutions with a more sustainable alternative while reducing maintenance cost.

In this collaborative effort, Brilliant Matters’ expertise in high-performance materials and Epishine’s expertise in roll-to-roll manufacturing will be leveraged to take light energy harvesting to the next level. The goal of this project is to further enhance the performance in ambient, indoor conditions.

“We are thrilled to be working with Epishine to bring this vision to life,” said Jean-Rémi Pouliot, CEO of Brilliant Matters. “Our team has been working tirelessly in the past few years to develop a manufacturing platform that allows the production of organic semiconductors using green and scalable chemistry. Together with Epishine, this collaboration will enable us to create products that will have a real impact on global sustainability and change the way we think about energy.”

Both companies are firmly rooted in decades of research and use scalable and sustainable manufacturing methods for their products, so the fit was natural. They also share a similar vision for the future, which is to create a light-harvesting technology so cost-effective, sustainable, and easy to scale that it will solve many of the environmental issues we face today. This collaboration is one step forward to realise both companies’ visions.

“Focusing on roll-to-roll production enables high production capacity and yield, while controlling production costs. Our collaboration with an innovative company such as Brilliant Matters enables us to enhance the performance of our products. We believe our complementary expertise is beneficial for both parties,” says Jonas Bergqvist, CTO at Epishine.
