Swatch Group and CSEM develop ecosystem for connected objects

The watch manufacturer Swatch Group and the micro- and nanotechnology R&D centre CSEM, both based in Switzerland, are working on the development of a unique Swiss-made ecosystem. It will be designed especially for the needs of small connected objects (Internet of Things) and, naturally, first and foremost for watches. This platform will be built around a tailor-made operating system that is completely new.

The Centre for Process Innovation (CPI), a UK-based technology innovation centre, announced the start of a new project to address the manufacturing challenges and exploit the commercial opportunities offered to industry by the ‘internet of things’ (IoT), a market predicted to be worth an estimated $253bn by 2021. The European Regional Development Fund has announced £2.6 million of funding for CPI to establish and run a new national technology centre in County Durham.

Steve Dunn-Massey joined the UK-based business, which has offices in North Wales and Manchester, back in November. Dunn-Massey has worked in several roles as group finance director at technology-led global businesses over the past 25 years and joins a leadership team with high experience and skills in the electronic display market.

Groundbreaking for new Novaled premises in Dresden: Samsung invests €20M

The construction work for the new company headquarters of Novaled GmbH are about to start in the north of Dresden, Germany, with the symbolic first groundbreaking. In the next few months, an old mill, a listed monument, will be renovated and converted into a prestigious office building on the 10 200m² site.

CSEM and Sefar develop low-cost technology for large-area OLEDs

Developing a low-cost, efficient method of increasing the attractiveness of OLEDs for lighting poses a significant challenge. Thanks to a CTI project, the micro- and nanotechnology R&D centre CSEM and Sefar AG (both from Switzerland) have succeeded in designing a promising state-of-the-art way of achieving this aim. This technology is reported to open up new opportunities for applications in residential, professional lighting segments, as well as consumer electronics.
